System Requirements:

Are there any specific system requirements when using the JetPlan.com website?

Yes. JetPlan.com is tested with current web browsers and a best effort is made to support cross browser compatibility of the most popular versions. JetPlan.com can now be accessed with other browsers although proper functioning for all JPDC features are not 100% guaranteed. For example, Firefox users may notice discrepancies in terminology. A known example includes when saving files to your local disk. Internet Explorer presents this option as 'Save Target As' whereas Firefox presents the option as 'Save Link As'.

While effort has been made to make primary features cross browser compatible, certain minor items may not work as expected. An example is the 'Close Browser' button seen upon logout. This button will not work for Firefox users. This is considered a minor issue since users should be easily capable of closing the browser in another manner. Finally, Firefox users will note that for normal usage of JPDC the popup blocking feature built into Firefox must be disabled for this website.

Performance:

Why is the flight planning interface slower to display than other pages on this website?

The JetPlan.com Flight Planning interface is not a basic HTML web page. Rather, it is an applet - a Java based program that can be downloaded over the internet to your PC and then executed to display through the browser. Thus, any delay in viewing this interface usually involves the download of the applet from the server to your PC.

What should I expect the flight planning applet load time to be, and will this vary from time to time or system to system?

If you do not have the latest version of the flight planning applet stored in the cache of your PC, it will be downloaded from the website the next time you access it on JetPlan.com. The download time can vary from 20 seconds to 2 minutes, depending on your internet access speed. However, once the applet is downloaded, it is stored in cache. Thus, the next time you request Flight Planning, your PC will load the applet from cache rather than from the internet.

The time required to load the applet from cache depends on your PC’s internal processing power. However, it should be significantly less time than required for the initial internet download, especially if you have a fairly modern PC. Should a new version of the applet be introduced on the website, it will download to your PC again, but this should be a limited occurrence. If for some reason your cache is erased, whether by design or not, the applet will need to be downloaded again.

Security:

What kind of encryption is available to JPDC users?

JetPlan.com uses standard secure socket 128 bit encryption to protect your data from being read by an unauthorized party. For more information on Secure Login and 128 bit encryption select "What's new on v1.08" on the JetPlan.com Home page.

What can users of public computers do to enhance their security?

When utilizing a PC that is shared by other users, take the following precautionary steps to prevent the unauthorized access to your information.

1 Before you log on to JPDC, verify that the IE browser residing on the PC is configured to prevent cached copies of previously composed web pages from appearing. To do this, select Internet Options (from the "Tools" drop down menu), select Settings under Temporary Internet files and then make sure that under "Check for newer versions of stored pages": the following option is turned on: "> Every visit to the page". If it is, click OK. If it is not, select it and then click OK to apply the change.

Internet Explorer Window  ->
  Tools  ->
    Internet Options...  ->
      General   ->
        Settings...(In temporary Internet files block) ->
          Check "Every visit to the page". Then click OK to apply.

Afterwards, if possible, request that the owner of the PC (e.g. FBO manager) make sure that this setting is not changed.

2 As an extra precaution, upon logging out of JPDC, you should always delete all temporary internet files and all offline content. This will prevent future JPDC users logging in via this PC from being able to view web pages created for you. To do this, as above, select Internet Options (from the "Tools" drop down menu), then select Delete Files under Temporary Internet files, select Delete all offline content and then click OK.

Internet Explorer Window  ->
  Tools  ->
    Internet Options...  ->
      General   ->
        Delete Files...(In temporary Internet files block) ->
          Check "Delete all offline content" and click "OK"

Upgrades:

How will I get new versions of the flight planning applet?

Periodically, Jeppesen will introduce a new version of the flight planning applet in order to provide enhancements and new features. You will never have to explicitly request the new version. It is updated automatically. Your browser will compare the version number of the applet stored in your PC’s cache with the one on the website to see if it has the latest version. If is does not, the browser will download the new version and it will be stored in cache on your PC. The only difference you might notice when requesting the Flight Planning link is a slight increase in the time it takes for the applet to display. It usually takes more time to load the applet from the internet website than from cache on your PC.

Trouble Shooting:

Whenever I select "flight planning" from the home page, I receive the message "Your jetplan.com session has timed out. Please close this window. To request a flight plan, please log back in to jetplan.com". Because I always get this message, I can never build and submit a flight plan request using the applet. How do I solve this problem?

First log out of jetplan.com. Then, from you browser window click on " Tools" and scroll to "Internet Options". Under "Temporary Internet files" click on "Settings". Under "Check for newer versions of stored pages:" make sure that the option "Every visit to the page" is selected. If it is not, click on the radio button to the left of "Every visit to the page". Then click on "OK" for the "Settings" sub window and then "OK" for the "Internet Options" window. You should then log back into jetplan.com and select "flight planning". You should no longer receive the time out message and you should be able to proceed to build and submit a flight plan request. If the above steps do not solve this problem, please contact flight planning support at 1-800-jetplan.

I am having trouble starting the JetPlan.com flight planning applet. Even if I can start it, I can't get it to work properly.

First, try erasing your cached temporary internet files. In Internet Explorer you can do this by clicking on Tools > Internet Options > and then clicking the "Delete Files" button under Temporary Internet Files. Once you've cleared these files then close down all instances of your web browser. Restart your web browser and retry loading the flight planning applet.

If the above suggestion does not solve the problem then you may need to investigate further into your PC setup. For some period of time, Microsoft did not ship a compatible Java plugin with Internet Explorer. It is also possible that your installation of Java is corrupt or out of date. Please install the latest Java Virtual Machine "JVM" from the Sun download site.

Here is a link to the free JVM download page from Sun:

www.java.com

You may be prompted to restart your computer. At the very least, please close all Internet Explorer windows after the Java install and launch a new Internet Explorer before trying again.

Finally, it is worth checking the Security and Privacy settings (two separate tabs under Tools > Internet Options) to make sure that these are not excessively restrictive. Proper functioning of JetPlan.com should be achievable with "Medium" settings here. Higher settings may cause problems with other areas of JetPlan.com or could even prevent proper login authentication.

I'm having problems with the size of the windows displayed by JetPlan.com. I can't see the bottom of portion of the window and in some cases I can't access the scroll bar.

The best thing to try is to tighten the resolution of your monitor. We suggest 1024 x 768. This seems to be the optimal setting for most PC's and should enable the window to be fully visualized. However, if this is not enough, increase the resolution until you achieve satisfactory results.

To manipulate the resolution of your monitor click Start | Settings | Active Desktop | Customize my Desktop. Then, click the Settings tab and manipulate your resolution in the Screen Area section. To apply, click OK.

Why can't I get to the Flight Planning page when I can get to the rest of the JetPlan.com website?

The interactive Flight Planning page is an applet created in the Java programming language. Your firewall is most likely blocking all Java applets, including our tool. To resolve this issue, please contact your local network administrator. In most cases, they should be able to allow just java applets that originate from www.jetplan.com while blocking java applets from the rest of the World Wide Web.

When I try to generate a flight plan, I get back the message "WT ERROR". What does this mean and what do I do about it?

There can be a few reasons for this, but the most likely one is that your aircraft does not have an Operational Weight value loaded. To check this, click the Customer Database link on the JetPlan.com navigation bar, then select the aircraft you are using in the flight plan from the list of aircraft in your database (the aircraft name is a link to a view of the stored data). Look to see if the correct value is loaded for the Operational Weight parameter (OP). If not, click the Change an Aircraft link found in the command menu on the left. Select the OP WT text box, type the correct value and click the Submit New Weight Values button. Finally, go back to the Flight Planning interface, click Standard and Generate A Flight Plan. If you still receive the message "WT ERROR", please contact Jeppesen at the appropriate number found on the Contact Us page.

For printing weather maps, how can I make sure that the entire image is included in the output?

If our weather graphic images are getting cropped when printing (i.e., the right side of image is off the edge of the paper), try this procedure:

When I rerun a previously computed flight plan, the flight plan output does not include the command options at the top (i.e, Plot, Transmit, ATC File, etc...) as it does when computed initially. Why is this and how do I access these options?

The fact that the View window does not provide the same options when displaying the output of a recomputed flight plan as it does when displaying a newly computed flight plan is a known deficiency in our Rerun application. We hope to have this corrected at some point in the near future. In the meantime, if you use the Dispatch Center to view the recomputed flight plan, you will have all of the aforementioned options available to you.

Features/Limitations:

What are the basic features of JetPlan.com?

JetPlan.com offers a comprehensive suite of tools for creating and disseminating flight plans, weather, and other information. To get an overview of all that is available, click the "About JetPlan.com" link in the navigation bar or click here.

What flight planning inputs cannot be used with the flight planning interface on JetPlan.com?

A majority of the flight planning inputs/options described in the Flight Planning and Weather Services: Interactive User Manual (IUM) are supported in the present version of JetPlan.com. However, there are a relatively few input types that were left out of the current version. These are listed below. If you require use of one or more of these omitted input types, we suggest that you use your other Service Bureau connection method. Please contact us if you have questions or comments regarding these omissions.

Alternate Inputs not supported:

Restricted Area Inputs that are not supported:

ETD Inputs not supported:

Payload, POD/POA Wt & Fuel Inputs not supported:

The following POD or POA Wt/Fuel Secondary Inputs are not supported at this time by the Advanced Payload & Fuel Graphical User Interface. However, they are all supported by the entry box entitled "Secondary inputs for POD/POA Weight/Fuel" offered by the Special Options Graphical User Interface (IUM 12-2 to 12-3):

Tanker Inputs not supported:

Other Input Types not supported:

What other major features documented in the Flight Planning and Weather Services: Interactive User Manual are not supported by JetPlan.com?

T4 charts in the graphic weather section can not be automatically transmitted via FAX. We suggest that anyone wishing to FAX these charts simply print them and then FAX.

Also the waypoint ID search capabilities, LL & LLX options, are not supported at this time. When they are, you will find them on the General Info web page.

How long will flight plans remain available in the Dispatch Center?

This depends on the number of transactions (i.e., flight plans, database queries, etc...) requested. The archive will run through 9999 transactions before it recycles to 0001.

Can flight plans be deleted from the Dispatch Center?

No, but they will be written over as the archive recycles.

Route Plots

The JPDC route plot feature is for general geo-political boundry overviews and is not intended for navigational purposes. There are some inacuraccies in the low resolution world layer, for example the Bermuda island appears approximately 1 degree southeast of its true position. Implementation of the higher resolution layers were intended to ameliorate this problem. Another known route plot bug is the inability to plot round robin flights (where the POD = POA).

JPDC produces various KML files which can be loaded into Google Earth

JetPlan.com (JPDC) can now provide route of flight information in .KML. format. This allows customers to overlay a flight path on a .Google Earth. display, or other products that can support the KML format.

While we support this output format, it is up to the customer to obtain the appropriate license for .Google Earth. or any other product that supports KML overlays. We do not sell or sub-license .Google Earth. and we cannot provide legal advice to customers with respect to the type of license they should acquire.
